Raising Boys

In partnership with our families, we’ve been joyously raising boys in San Francisco since 1957. Of course, the world has changed since then, and the conversation about masculinity continues to evolve. As a school committed to outstanding education for boys, we are forever on the vanguard of knowing what it takes to guide each young man to be his best self, in all ways, at all times.
At Cathedral, we see the academic experience specifically through a boy's lens, which allows us to build a community where boyhood is both celebrated and calibrated.

We devote each day to the spirited dialogue, dynamic lessons, and intentional character building that guide each young boy to engage in the way that best fits him, while he simultaneously develops empathy and respect for the world around him.

Here are just a few examples of what it means to raise boys at Cathedral:

  • Our Big Brother/Little Brother Program

When boys develop relationships with lower-/upperclassmen, they learn to care for others, they develop empathy, and they become open-hearted leaders who understand their impact on others. All Cathedral School boys are paired as big/little brothers and those relationships continue throughout their time here, and beyond.

  • Chapel

When boys spend time in quiet reflection while listening to the wisdom of peers and teachers, they have space and time to think about their place in a bigger world. When they join together in song, they are united in a language that crosses all barriers and opens the door to joy in their school day. Members of the Cathedral School community kick off each week listening as eighth-graders share life and learning experiences during Chapel Talks and sing together at the end of each week during Hymn Sing.

  • Our Uniforms

When a school asks boys to dress with intention for their school day, we teach them respect for themselves and their schoolwork. And when all boys dress alike, displays of socioeconomic status are diminished. Boys at Cathedral School wear nearly the same uniform that their predecessors wore sixty years ago when the school was founded, forging a connection between every boy who has attended the school.
