Denny Gillingham joined Cathedral School for Boys in 2024 as an Upper School math teacher for Grades 5–8. With over two decades of experience in education, Denny brings passion for fostering critical thinking and analytical skills in students. Prior to Cathedral, he taught at Convent & Stuart Hall in San Francisco and Brookfield Central High School in Wisconsin, where he was twice named the Most Influential Educator by top graduating seniors.
Denny holds a B.S. in mathematics from the University of Wisconsin-Stevens Point and an M.S. in curriculum and instruction from the University of Wisconsin-Madison. His academic journey continued at UC Berkeley, where he was a research fellow in the doctoral program in mathematics education. At Berkeley, Denny contributed to the development of the Teaching for Robust Understanding (TRU) framework and was involved in projects funded by the National Science Foundation and the Gates Foundation.
Denny’s commitment to education extends beyond the classroom. He has taught courses at UC Berkeley’s Cal Teach program and San Francisco State University, published research on formative assessment, and conducted professional development for East Bay teachers. These experiences have fueled his ongoing curiosity about teaching and learning.
Outside of the classroom, Denny enjoys spending time with his wife and their three-year-old son, Walter. They can often be found exploring playgrounds and museums throughout the Bay Area, grabbing bagels on weekends, and playing soccer at the Beach Chalet fields. As a Wisconsin native, Denny never misses an opportunity to cheer on his home state’s sports teams when they visit the Bay Area.
